Valentines on hat and sleeve

14 February · England

No longer kept

Paired valentines wore each other’s names or favours, he on her hat and she on her sleeve. Poor Robin’s first almanac printed the couplet down the calendar column beside St Valentine’s Day, with Ned and Nan standing for any country couple.

Now Ned and Nan have Valentines, We may believe: his on her Hat, hers on her sleeve.
