Sweeping the girls

14 February · Derbyshire

No longer kept

In Derbyshire a girl who had not been kissed by Valentine’s morning was said to be dusty, and had to be swept with a broom. After the sweeping she was kissed by the young men of the house and the neighbourhood, who went round their friends’ houses to do it. Dyer, quoting Notes and Queries, called it a real old Derbyshire custom.

If a girl did not have a kiss, or if her sweetheart did not come to see her early on this morning, it was because she was dusty, and therefore it was needful that she should be well swept with a broom
