Rings, gloves and ribbons for valentines

Valentines greeted each other with presents of rings, gloves and ribbons, and sealed the match with kisses. Poor Robin set the verse down his calendar column for 1774. In the prose beside it he warned that the day’s conjunctions might be felt nine months later in the bills of the midwife and nurse.

With rings and gloves and ribbands meet, Now Valentines each other greet; Stealing the match with kisses sweet.
