Domesday Book records under Shropshire a tenant who paid for half a carucate of land with a bundle of box twigs on Palm Sunday. Brand took it as proof of how old the English use of box and other greenery in place of real palms on that day was. Churchwardens’ accounts from London parishes in later centuries show them still buying palm, box, flowers and cakes for Palm Sunday.
