Palm flowers, cakes and juniper in the City churches

Before the Reformation London parishes bought palm, box, flowers and cakes for Palm Sunday, and sometimes juniper to sweeten the church. Brand, quoting Nichols’s extracts from the churchwardens’ accounts of St Martin Outwich, gives fourpence for palm, box-flowers and cakes in 1510 to 1511. The accounts of Allhallows Staining add flowers, cakes, thread, box and palm for the day, and twopence for juniper for the church.
