As a boy in Durham, Henderson walked with his friends to the riverbank near Kepier Hospital to gather willow catkins for Palm Sunday. They made them into crosses shaped like St Andrew’s, with a tuft of catkins at each point, bound with knots and bows of ribbon. The Rev. G. Ornsby remembered the same crosses in the Vale of Lanchester, tied with blue or pink ribbon.

Many a time have I when a boy walked with my comrades to the river-bank, near Kepier Hospital, to gather palms ; and many a cross have I made of them for Palm Sunday.
