At St Laurence’s church in Reading the singers of the Passion on Palm Sunday were rewarded with ale and wine. Brand, quoting the churchwardens’ accounts of St Laurence as printed in Coates’s History of Reading, gives a penny of ale for the clerk in 1505, a quart of bastard wine for the singers in 1509, and fourpence in 1541 to one Loreman for playing the Prophet. Kingston upon Thames also paid for ale for the singing of the Passion.
