Before the Reformation people went on Palm Sunday to the well of Our Lady of Nantswell at Little Conan in Cornwall, carrying a cross made of palm. After giving the priest a present they were allowed to throw the cross into the well. If it floated, the thrower would live out the year; if it sank, he would not. Hone took the account from Carew.
