No longer kept

Every year a garland of flowers was placed on the effigy of a Vernon in Tong church. A correspondent of 1801 explained that it was a land tenure: Roger de la Zouch had granted land for a yearly chaplet of roses on St John the Baptist’s Day, to be put on the image of the Virgin if the lord was away, and after the images went the owners of the land garlanded the monument instead.
