Midsummer cushions

No longer kept

In Northumberland on Midsummer Day stools were dressed with a cushion of flowers. A layer of clay was spread on the stool and flowers of every kind were stuck in it so closely and neatly that they made a solid cushion. These were set out at cottage doors in the villages and at street ends and lanes in the towns, where those who tended them begged money from passers-by for an evening feast and dance.

In Northumberland, it is customary on this day to dress out stools with a cushion of flowers.
