Gingerbread taffies on a goat

On St David’s Day the gingerbread bakers and pastry-cooks of London set out taffies, little white figures of a Welshman riding on a goat, stuck on wooden skewers for children to buy. A Hertfordshire correspondent remembered them from his schooldays in the metropolis and in large country towns. By 1831 he noted they had lately vanished from the shop windows altogether.
