Lore and belief

In the West Country March was called Lide, and eating leeks that month was thought to keep the doctor away all year. The rhyme paired the leeks with ramsons, or wild garlic, eaten in May. Aubrey recorded it as a proverbial rhyme of the common people.

Eate Leekes in Lide, and Ramsins in May, And all the yeare after Physitians may play.
