A Welsh love charm said that anyone who walked three times round the leek-bed in silence at midnight on St David’s Eve would see their future husband or wife. Trevelyan gives it with other St David’s beliefs: a midnight visit to the churchyard showed corpse-candles on the graves of families due to lose someone that year, and a shoe thrown over the head with its toes pointing out of doors meant leaving home or dying within the year.
