The crows begin to search

Among the proverbial sayings for St David’s Day that Ellis found still current in the north of England was a short rhyme about the crows. Beside it he gave the northern rule to put oats and barley in the clay on the same day, and the rhyme of the first three days of March, David, Chad and Winnold. Ellis gives no explanation of the crows’ rhyme, though early March is when rooks and crows are busy about their nests.
