Going a-palming

Palm Sunday · London

No longer kept

Early on Palm Sunday men and boys went out from London to gather willow or sallow branches with their grey, velvety buds, which stood in for palms. They came home with sprigs in their hats and buttonholes and one in the mouth, carrying the branches. A few basket women at Covent Garden sold the palm on the Saturday before, but by 1825 the demand was small. Hone also notes that the grammar-school boys of Lanark paraded a willow in blossom, decked with daffodils and box, on Palm Saturday.

It is still customary with men and boys to go a palming in London early on Palm Sunday morning
