On Easter Day a mock tree dressed with evergreens and flowers was set up on a turf by the buttery at University College, Oxford. Every member leaving Hall after dinner struck it with a cleaver, and the college cook stood by with a plate for their money. Dyer quotes Notes and Queries: the Master gave half a guinea and each Fellow five shillings and sixpence.
