Each Easter Sunday the freeholders of Lostwithiel chose one of their number in turn to play a prince. Richly dressed and mounted, with a crown and sceptre and a sword carried before him, he rode in state to church, where the minister met him at the churchyard stile. Afterwards he was served on bended knee at a feast before giving up his finery. It was thought to be a memory of the princes who once lived at Restormel Castle nearby.
