In the middle districts of Ireland a fat hen or some bacon was put in the pot on the evening of Holy Saturday, and nobody dared taste it before cock-crow. At midnight the clapping and laughing began to put the Lent out, and people rose at four to see the sun dance for joy at the Resurrection. Respectable families told Hone’s correspondent they had seen it with their own eyes. In parts of England the same sight was looked for in a pool of clear water and called the lamb-playing.
