At Easter the country people round Ross went corn-showing: parties went into the wheat to pick out the cockle, taking cake, cider and, as one informant put it, a yard of toasted cheese. Whoever first picked a cockle from the wheat won the first kiss of the maid and the first slice of the cake. The account comes from Fosbroke’s notes on Ross and Archenfield, printed in the magazine in 1822, which said the custom was not in Brand.

The first person who picks the cockle from the wheat has the first kiss of the Maid, and the first slice of the Cake.
