Jauping paste-eggs

Easter Sunday · Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland

Still kept

Newcastle boys spent Easter jauping their dyed paste-eggs, knocking one against another until a shell gave way. The winner claimed the broken egg as his spoil. Brockett also noted that Easter Sunday itself was commonly called Paste-egg Day.

One boy, holding an egg in his hand, challenges another to give blow for blow. One of the eggs is sure to be fractured in the conflict, and its shattered remains become the spoil of the conqueror.
