If a leaf or berry of the Christmas greenery was left in church after Candlemas, the family sitting in that pew would see a death within the year. A Suffolk correspondent in Chambers knew an old lady who would not trust the clearing to the church officers, and sent her servant on Candlemas Eve to make sure her own pew was free of danger.

If every remnant of Christmas decoration is not cleared out of church before Candlemas-day (the Purification, February 2), there will be a death that year in the family occupying the pew where a leaf or berry is left.
