The horn beaker thrown between the Candlemas candles

2 February · Wales

No longer kept

On Candlemas Day Welsh families lit two candles on a table, and each member in turn sat between them, drank from a horn beaker and threw it backwards over their head. If it landed upright the thrower would live to a great age; if it fell bottom upwards, they would die young. Trevelyan took the custom from her family’s collection and placed it many years before her own time.

Then each member of the family would in turn sit down on a chair between the candles. They then took a drink out of a horn goblet or beaker
