Candlemas candles against witchcraft

2 February · England

Lore and belief

Candles hallowed on Candlemas Day were counted among the things that kept people safe from witchcraft, with holy water, consecrated salt and green leaves blessed on Palm Sunday. Reginald Scot listed them in his Discovery of Witchcraft (1584), and Brand quotes him among the charms used against witches.

Men are preserved from witchcraft by sprinkling of holy water, receiving consecrated salt, by candles hallowed on Candlemas-day, and by green leaves consecrated on Palm Sunday.
