Most ordinary people kept Christmas going not just for the twelve days but until Candlemas, feasting all the while and proud to have some of their Christmas fare still in hand. Once Candlemas came they were just as keen to be rid of it. Bourne thought the forty days had been fixed in honour of the Virgin’s lying-in, since under the old law a woman’s purification came forty days after a birth.

With some, Christmass ends with the Twelve Days, but with the Generality of the Vulgar, not till Candlemass. Till then they continue Feasting, and are ambitious of keeping some of their Christmass-Chear
