Country people took the snowdrop, which reliably flowered through the snow at Candlemas, as an emblem of the Purification of the Virgin. Forster noted that it kept to the feast in almost any weather, and found it flowered at the same season at Rome as at Walthamstow. A rhyme he printed has it that the snowdrop first rears her head on Candlemas Day.
