The Christmas brand burnt again at Candlemas

On Candlemas Day the saved brand of the Christmas log was lit once more and left to burn until sunset, then put out and laid up again until the next Christmas. Herrick’s The Ceremonies for Candlemasse day says part of it must be kept to kindle next year’s log, and that where it was safely stored the Fiend could do no mischief.

Kindle the Christmas Brand and then / Till Sunne-set, let it burne; / Which quencht, then lay it up agen, / Till Christmas next returne.
