On Candlemas Day Irish country people brought to mass all the candles they expected to need for the year, to be blessed by the priest at high mass. The blessed candles were then kept for curing wounds, aches and diseases. W. Bingley, who had travelled every county in fourteen years’ residence, called the custom detestable in a letter of 1795.
