Ray’s Collection of Proverbs has a Somerset rule for Candlemas: sow or set beans on Candlemas waddle. In Somerset waddle meant the wane of the moon, so the advice was to get the beans into the ground in the waning moon about Candlemas. Brand printed it beside Ray’s other Candlemas proverb about throwing candle and candlestick away.
