Some people kept one hot cross bun from Good Friday to the next Good Friday as a charm against the many crosses of life, out of piety and fear of disease. A few still ate its stale remains on the day. Forster likened this to the North Riding custom of keeping one St Stephen’s goose pie until Candlemas.
