Lore and belief

Mid-Somerset labourers believed a prophecy of Mother Shipton that Ham Hill would be swallowed by an earthquake at noon on Good Friday 1879, and Yeovil flooded at the same moment. As the day approached, some families left the district altogether. Hazlitt took the story from the Pall Mall Gazette of April 1879.

It was to the effect that at twelve o'clock on Good Friday of 1879, Ham Hill should suddenly be swallowed up by an earthquake
