Good Friday was believed in Lancashire to be the witches’ great day of gathering. In her confession of 1633 Margaret Johnson, a reputed witch of the Pendle country, said that Good Friday was always a day for a general meeting of witches, and that on the last Good Friday they had met near Pendle Water side. Brand’s editor sets beside it an old charm for the bewitched, in which the speaker vows to fast on Good Friday until the bell is rung.
