In Connaught poor Catholic families kept Good Friday with a total fast, giving their children nothing from midnight to midnight, even babies at the breast. Parents took only a little dry bread and a drink of water all day. Women walked the roads between the market towns barefoot, with their hair loose and in their worst clothes, in imitation of the Passion.
