Before the Reformation a gold crucifix kept inside the image of Our Lady of Bolton in Durham Abbey was taken out every Good Friday, and everyone in the church crept to it. After the Passion was sung two old monks laid a great gold crucifix on a velvet cushion embroidered with St Cuthbert’s arms at the lowest step of the choir. Each monk in turn, shoes off, went a little way from it and crept to it on his knees to kiss it, then the prior and all the monks after him, while the choir sang a hymn. The cross was then carried to the Easter sepulchre.
