Grey peas and runcivals were sown at Candlemas, with a generous hand. Green peas, or hastings, went in at Hallowtide in good soil. White peas had to wait until St Gregory’s Day in March. Tusser also told the farmer to hold off threshing his barley until Candlemas, to spare his hay.

Greene peason or hastings at Hallontide sowe, / in hartie good soile he requireth to growe: / Graie peason or runciuals cheerely to stand, / at Candlemas sowe, with a plentifull hand.
