On Old Christmas Day in Herefordshire nobody might borrow fire from a neighbour; it had to be bought with some trifle, such as a pin. No woman was to enter the house that day, and the rule about fire lasted all twelve days. Fosbroke recorded it in the notes printed in 1822.

Old Christmas Day. No person must borrow fire, but purchase it, with some trifle or other, for instance, a pin.
