Nailing coat-tails at the Twelfth-cake shops

6 January · London

No longer kept

On Twelfth Night London boys crowded round the pastrycooks’ windows, full of iced Twelfth-cakes, and nailed the coat-tails of onlookers to the window frames. Others pinned people together by their clothes, so that eight or ten might find themselves joined, and every nailing and pinning was greeted with shouts of laughter. A constable was usually posted to keep the doorway clear, but he did little to stop them. The victim either left part of his coat behind or went off with a hole in it.

On Twelfth-night in London, boys assemble round the inviting shops of the pastrycooks, and dexterously nail the coat-tails of spectators, who venture near enough, to the bottoms of the window frames
