The Lady Mary’s Twelfth Night banquet

In November of about 1525 the council of the young Princess Mary’s household wrote from Tewkesbury to Cardinal Wolsey asking how she should keep the coming Christmas. They wanted to know whether to appoint a Lord of Misrule, provide interludes, disguisings or plays, hold a banquet on Twelfth Night, and send New Year’s gifts to the King and Queen. Sandys printed the letter from Ellis’s Original Letters as a sign of how little could be done without Wolsey’s leave.

whither we shall appoynte any Lord of Mysrule for the said honorable householde, provide for enterluds, disgysyngs, or pleyes in the said fest, or for banket on twelf nyght.
