Stang and swill on Old Christmas Day

In Cumberland it was a regular Old Christmas Day custom to catch every man in reach, carry him to a public-house on a pole, and fine him a pint of beer. Women were carried the same way in a swill, a large basket. Brockett gave it at the end of his account of riding the stang, a shaming punishment in which offenders were carried astride a pole.

In Cumberland, it was a constant holiday custom, on Old Christmas Day, to carry every man they could catch, on a stang, and every woman, in a swill, to a public-house, and fine them a pint of beer.
