When the calendar changed in 1752, many country people round Worcester went on keeping Christmas by the old reckoning, which now fell on Twelfth Day. In January 1753 several villages insisted on an Old Style nativity sermon so strongly that their ministers had to preach one, and in market towns whose market day fell on that Friday not a butter basket or a goose was to be seen all day. Hone took the report from the Gentleman’s Magazine and added that Old Christmas Day was still kept in distant parts in his own time.
