On Twelfth Night poor maidens carried a wassail bowl of spiced ale with apples from door to door, singing to be let in and hoping for a gift. Their carol, printed by Sandys from a black-letter book of New Christmas Carols once owned by Anthony Wood, asked the master and then his wife to taste first, and called it the merry night of choosing king and queen.
