Brand’s servant Betty Jelkes, who had lived for some years at Evesham, told him of an old custom of the town’s market gardens. Every year on Holy Thursday, Ascension Day, the master gardeners gave their workpeople a treat of baked peas, both white and grey, with pork. She described it to him as an ancient custom of the place.
