In the parish of Logierait in Perthshire, lucky and unlucky days were anxiously watched. Whatever day of the week the fourteenth of May fell on was thought unlucky for the rest of the year, and no one would marry or begin any serious business on it. No one would marry in January or May either. Just before a wedding every knot about the bride and groom was loosened, and afterwards the company walked round the church with its walls always on their right hand, before bride and groom slipped away separately to tie up their knots again.
