Aubrey wrote about 1690 that the fellows of New College had gone every Holy Thursday, time out of mind, between eight and nine in the morning, to the hospital of St Bartholomew near Oxford. There prayers were read and an anthem sung in the chapel, and they then walked to the upper end of the grove, along a path strewn with flowers by the poor people of the hospital. They stood round the well and sang a song in three, four or five parts, took a morning draught there and went back to Oxford before the sermon.
