Pennant was told that the old people of Nantwich sang a hymn of thanksgiving on Ascension Day for the blessing of the brine that made the town’s salt. An ancient pit called the Old Brine was held in great respect, and until a few years before he wrote it was dressed every Ascension Day with boughs, flowers and garlands. Young people circled it with singing and dancing to keep the day.
