Seggs on the doorstep for Ascension

No longer kept

Near York children used to lay rushes, called seggs, on their doorsteps to mark Ascension Day. Henderson heard it had been the custom about twenty years before he wrote. The Rev. G. Ornsby thought it a survival of the strewing of streets before the old Ascension procession.
