On Ascension Day the magistrates, the River Jury and other officers of Newcastle kept an old custom of going the bounds of the town’s jurisdiction on the river in their barges, to guard against encroachments. Brand, who knew the town well, notes that cheerful toasts were drunk to the coaly Tyne on the way. The town’s schoolboys had been invited since at least 1657 to walk with the magistrates when they went round the bounds by land.
