Hailing the Lamb on Ascension morning

Ascension Day · near Exeter, Devon

Lore and belief

In many villages round Exeter people went out on Ascension morning to hail the Lamb. They were firmly persuaded that the figure of a lamb could be seen in the east as the day broke. A correspondent of the Gentleman’s Magazine for 1787 found the belief so deeply rooted that even thoughtful people held to it against every argument.

It is the custom in many villages in the neighbourhood of Exeter to 'hail the Lamb,' upon Ascension morn.
