The slate quarrymen at Lord Penrhyn’s quarries near Bangor would not work on Ascension Day, believing an accident was certain if they did. When the managers once persuaded them to work, there was a serious accident every year, and the men went back to staying away. Hazlitt quoted The Times of 1888 and the Daily News of 1878.

The cessation of work is not due to any religious regard for the day, but is attributable to a superstition, which has long lingered in the district, that if work is continued an accident is inevitable.
