Brockett’s glossary of north-country words mentions the smock race on Ascension Day, run by young countrywomen for a fine holland smock trimmed with ribbons. Such races were common in the north, and the one at Newburn near Newcastle was still being run in his day. Brand’s editor adds a comic poem of 1714 describing a smock race on the green at Finglas near Dublin, with a lace-trimmed smock for the winner, a cambric kerchief for the second and kid gloves for the third.
