Plot saw the wells at Brewood and Bilbrook in Staffordshire adorned with boughs and flowers on Holy Thursday, a custom he said was kept at all the gospel places, wells, trees or hills, where the gospel was read on the bounds. He thought it innocent enough as a matter of custom and decency, though he disapproved of the old well-worship it came from. A correspondent of the Gentleman’s Magazine in 1794 said the custom had been kept at both places within recent years.
